The Barrier
I like to think I am protecting myself from getting emotionally hurt.
I have put up a barrier-
Fenced and caged off the rest of me.
There are secrets you will never know
I have locked away words you will never hear,
There are cries you will never hear,
and tears you will never see.
Because I built not just a fence but a wall,
One that is hard to tear down.

I have created this barrier to protect myself and others.
But one day someone may be able to break it down.
They say eyes are the key to one’s soul.
For now, that’s all you can see.
My eyes…
So am I really hiding?

Miles and Miles
The fields look they go on for miles on miles.
But where will I end up?
Empty, nothing but tall grass.
At the very end-
Where it may be
There is a tree
And the sun has just risen.
But what am I running towards?
That I don’t know right now,
But it seems as if I can run through these fields forever.
If that’s how long it takes, I’ll run forever.
I’ll run forever until I reach my destination.
Even if it’s the sun at the end of the fields-
The light at the end of my dark, never-ending tunnel,
I'll go for miles and miles.

Sincerely,
Aishah
